Halloween-Themed Post #1

Only four more days to Halloween, and in the spirit of the season, I thought I'd share a few of my favorite Halloween stories. First, a tale of Halloween Political Correctness...

It's obviously the most fun when you get to be around kids at Halloween. I remember switching from being excited over going trick or treating myself to being excited over taking my little twin neighbors trick or treating. During college, I volunteered at a nearby cooperative preschool, and was looking forward to experiencing Halloween vicariously through the wee ones there. We painted pictures of pumpkins and ghosts, read spooky stories, and sang Halloween songs, including one I remember from my own childhood:

Five Little Pumpkins

Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate
The first one said, "Oh, my it's getting late."
The second one said, "There are witches in the air".
The third one said, "But we don't care!"
The fourth one said, "Let's run and run and run".
The fifth one said, "I'm ready for some fun!"
Wooooo, went the wind
And out went the light
And the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight!

Midway through the song I was stopped by the head teacher, who told me the second pumpkin actually said, "there's something in the air". I told her I could have sworn it was witches. "I know," she told me, "but some of our parents are practicing Wiccans, and we don't want to have any hurt feelings".
